TEACHER, plumber, doctor, painter, firefighter, social worker, engineer, secretary, real estate agent the choices are daunting.

There are so many options and, for the school leaver, this can become overwhelming.

To help students gain a clearer understanding on career paths two expos will be held in the Hunter next week the Hunter Valley Career Expo on Tuesday at Tocal Agricultural College near Maitland and the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie Career Expo at Newcastle PanthersClub on Wednesday.

Careers expos enable visitors to speak with a plethora of people, whether it be those actually working in the field or industry experts, training providers and staff from government departments and educational institutions.

These people will be there to answer questions and help visitors identify employment pathways for the future.

Expos provide information about TAFE courses, private colleges, universities, apprenticeships, cadetships, traineeships and many jobs.

If you are in year 10, you could get advice on whether you need to continue with year 11 or 12 studies to further your aims and the range of subjects needed.

If you are studying for the HSC, the expos gives you the chance to further explore the career option you have in mind or find out about other related areas.

Information gained will enhance assistance received from your school's careers adviser and further help with your transition from school to the workplace.

You should receive an information booklet prior to attending the expo, which will help you best plan your day.

This booklet has advice and a list of possible questions that you could ask at the expo.

Also consult with your parents, peers and teachers for advice and questions to ask at the expo.

Parents and the public are able to attend, with the event being held outside work hours.

Many parents would like to be involved in their child's decision-making process. This also assists students who want to attend but do not want to miss the day at school either.
