Starting out

Becoming a travel agent requires an AQF Certificate II, tertiary qualification or equivalent work experience. Job duties include flight booking, itinerary selection and supplying visa information.

Salary

Travel agents earn on average $750 a week according to Federal Government figures. The MyCareer website cites the average salary as $48,600 a year.

Demographics

The Australian industry consists of 31,500 travel agents and 77 per cent work full-time. The average age is 35 and 74 per cent are women.

Prospects

Despite a small fall in employment expected in the next five years, prospects for travel agents are good. Job growth rose in the past five years. Job vacancy levels are high with 48 per cent of jobs available as a result of travel agents changing jobs, 48 per cent from job openings and 4 per cent from new positions.
