THE Newcastle Show Day debate continues to simmer; a Hamilton real estate agent said it was a drag on small business.
Castle Realty principal Randolph Rossi described show day as a deal between Newcastle and Lake Macquarie councils and their workers to get an extra day off."The council can't just give them the day off by themselves, there'd be an uproar, so it's gazetted as an extra public holiday."Big businesses that are registered outside the region don't have to observe it but people like us, who are registered in Newcastle, have to pay our staff double time or even more next Friday."A Newcastle City Council spokesman said it was up to individual businesses, schools and organisations to find out for themselves whether they were entitled to a show day holiday. He confirmed the holiday was provided for in the council's employment agreement.
